Weyburn Wildlife Federation hosts 72 archers at 3-D shoot

WEYBURN – A total of 72 archers travelled to Goodwater to take in the 3-D archery shoot hosted by the Weyburn Wildlife Federation over the weekend.

Organizer John Tilley said the weekend went really well, with 32 archers coming on Saturday and 40 on Sunday, with some travelling quite a distance to take in the shoot.

“Archers travelled four hours from Manitoba as well as from Regina, Moose Jaw, Oxbow, Estevan and surrounding area,” said Tilley, adding, “It was also attended by several families who were able to shoot together.”

One archer, Kevin Hamilton, came from Estevan, and is a big fan of the event.

“I wouldn’t miss this shoot, it’s always a good one,” he said.

He said the weekend went very well in general with a lot of positive comments by the visitors, “and people wanting us to let them know when we will be hosting another shoot.”

Tilley said the Wildlife Federation is in the planning stages for an outdoor 3-D shoot this summer, which was last held before the COVID pandemic, and the dates will be announced soon.

“All of this could not have happened without our great group of volunteers who looked after setting up the course, registration, the kitching, running the shooting line, sponsors of door prizes, and most of all, the archers and people who came to support our shoot,” said Tilley.

The shoot consisted of 3-D animal targets of various sizes, from foxes and skunks all the way up to moose, elk, bears and caribou, all set at varying distances. Some of the biggest targets, the elk and a bear, were set at 40 yards away at the very back of the rink, while some were relatively close to the firing line.

All of the animals have a target circle area, with the smallest circle earning the archer the most points.
