WEYBURN – Ten recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal were presented with the honour in Weyburn council chambers on Monday evening, just prior to the council meeting.
Coun. Jeff Richards read out each name, and Mayor Marcel Roy presented the medal to each recipient. The recipients are as follows:
- Arvilla Carleton - Volunteer Service
- Leah Knibbs - Business and Commerce
- Regan Lanning - Arts
- Fran Messer – Volunteer Service
- Florence Olene Monteith – Health Care (As Florence has recently passed, accepting the award posthumously was her son, Sandy)
- Raquel Oberkirsch - Reconciliation
- Tracey Rothwell – Volunteer Service
- Allan Tosczak – Business/Commerce
- Randy Uhren – Volunteer Service
- Cameron Weber – Volunteer Service
In addition, city manager Mathew Warren gave the background for the SUMA honourary service award presented earlier to Coun. Dick Michel, in recognition of the seven consecutive terms he served on council.
Coun. Michel served on many boards and committees of council, noted Warren, who said, “He always put his community first, and was always out in the community. He truly believed in what Weyburn was. He put countless hours into the community and it was appreciated by the community.”
He had to step aside from his seat at the end of March due to health considerations, and a by-election was held, won by Larry Heggs.
Heggs was sworn in by city solicitor Mike Weger prior to the start of the council meeting.
