Weyburn police hold high-visibility checkstop, tickets issued

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service received 64 calls for service during the week of Nov. 15-21, resulting in a total of 11 charges. Of the charges, three each are under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Traffic Safety Act, and the City of Weyburn Bylaws, as well as one each under the Cannabis Control Act and the Vehicle Equipment Regulations. Officers also executed four outstanding warrants and issued a 60-day driving suspension.

On Friday evening, police conducted a high-visibility traffic project which involved monitoring traffic for violations as well as checking several vehicles to ensure the drivers were sober. The project resulted in two tickets being issued for driving violations as well as several warnings.

One driver who tested positive for the presence of cannabis received a 60-day driver’s license suspension and a three-day vehicle impound. The project also lead to the arrest of three individuals who were found to have outstanding warrants for their arrest, all of who were released for upcoming court dates.

The Weyburn Police received a RID complaint regarding a possible impaired driver. Police located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver displayed signs of impairment and further investigation resulted in the driver being charged for operating a conveyance while impaired by alcohol. Thanks to the caller who reported what they saw, that driver was removed from the roads.

Officers conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven by an individual suspected of having a suspended license, also discovered that the individual had an outstanding warrant for their arrest. The adult male was charged for the driving offense as well as arrested and released with an upcoming court date regarding the outstanding warrant.

Police were called to a disturbance involving several youth at a local recreational facility. Further investigation of the reported altercation resulted in two youths being charged under the city’s bylaw for fighting.

During the weekend, police responded to a single-vehicle collision involving a vehicle that struck a planter located along the side of the road. No injuries resulted. Police also responded to a two-vehicle collision involving minor injuries. This incident resulted in one driver being charged for disobeying a red light.

Police also responded to a variety of other calls including several business alarms. In these cases, officers attended and searched the business with the property representative and determined the alarms to be false alarms.

The Weyburn Police would like to remind all drivers of the new crosswalks equipped with flashing amber lights. Please be aware and watch for pedestrians using them from both directions.
