WEYBURN – The Weyburn Police Service responded to 66 calls for service during the week of August 8-14, resulting in a total of 13 charges. Of the charges, four were laid under the Criminal Code of Canada, four under the Traffic Safety Act (TSA), and two each under the Summary Offences Procedure Act (SOPA) and the City of Weyburn bylaws.
Five charges resulted from individuals who either failed to attend court as required, or failed to comply with a condition of their release.
Late Saturday evening, an officer on patrol noticed a suspicious occupant in a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The traffic stop resulted in the adult male occupant facing several charges including failing to comply with a probation order, possessing break-in tools, and possessing a weapon dangerous to the public.
The male was also found to have outstanding warrants for his arrest relating to other criminal code matters. The male was arrested and held in custody for his appearance in court.
On Friday, officers attended to a residence that the homeowner reported having alcohol stolen from a fridge in the garage. The homeowner advised that nothing else was missing or damaged, but when checking around their property they noticed a small baggie that the culprit likely dropped during the heist.
The baggie, which appeared to contain a small amount of cocaine, was turned over to the officers. The matter is under investigation but it appears this may have been a financial loss for the culprit.
In the early morning hours of Monday, an officer on patrol noticed an individual lying on a grassy area in public. The officer checked on the adult male who was found to be heavily intoxicated. The individual was taken home and turned over to the care of a sober adult. No charges resulted.
On Tuesday, officers were called to remove an unwanted individual from a residential building. Officers spoke to the individual who complied and left the building.
Officers were called back to the area a short time later as the individual had returned and was lingering outside on the property. Officers again spoke to the individual and was able to give them a ride to a different location.
On Wednesday evening, officers responded to a single vehicle collision in which a reported erratic driver lost control and struck a bridge railing. No injuries resulted but the driver was charged under the TSA for driving at a speed greater than reasonable and safe.
Also on Wednesday, the Weyburn Police received calls of what the caller described as the sound of gun shots. Officers responded to the area but no suspicious vehicles or persons were located in the area, and no property was found to be disturbed or damaged.
In the early morning hours of Thursday, officers on patrol noticed an individual in a vehicle that was known to be in violation of his release order. The adult male was ultimately arrested and charged for failing to comply with his release conditions. He was held in custody to appear in court.
Officers also responded to a variety of other calls including alarms, domestic disturbances, suspicious persons or vehicles, mental health concerns, requests to check on an individual’s wellbeing, harassing communications, and calls relating to animals or bylaw concerns.
