WEYBURN – A Weyburn home on Douglas Road was extensively damaged by a fire on Friday evening, with a full contingent of Weyburn firefighters responding to the scene. The early estimation is that the damages are around $200,000.
The 911 call came in around 6:40 p.m., and the first arriving officers reported heavy smoke and flames visible from the roof of the residence. The radiant heat and fire were threatening nearby structures, including two garages and a neighbouring house. Responding resources involved a fire engine, aerial ladder truck, rescue truck, water tanker, utility truck and command vehicle.
Weyburn police and ambulance were on the scene, with the police blocking off Douglas Road and the alleyway in behind so fire and power crews could work safely.
Fire crews remained on the scene until approximately 10 p.m. The fire originated at the exterior of the house and breached the interior of the house and into the attic.
The occupants of the home were evacuated safely, after a group of adult soccer players in a field in Elks Park, across the street from the home, saw the fire and ran over to the scene.
One of the soccer players on the scene, Nichol Thompson, said they were about halfway through the park area when the flames could be seen above the house. They were able to get the two occupants out, along with a neighbour. The residents of the home on the east side had already vacated their home.
The Weyburn Fire Department thanks the players for their quick response and safe evacuation of the residents within the home. There were no reports of injuries, and the incident is still under investigation.
