Weyburn family fundraiser to help Mending Little Hearts fund

The Moule family's third annual chocolate chip cookie sale aims to raise $5,000 this year

WEYBURN – Jennie Moule and her daughters Morgyn and Myla are holding their third annual chocolate chip cookie fundraiser, for the Mending Little Hearts Fund of Saskatchewan, through the month of February, with the goal of raising $5,000 this year.

Morgyn was born with a congenital heart defect called Pulmonary Atresia with a VSD and ASD, and has had two open heart surgeries so far in her life, and will need more down the road, explained Jennie.

The first year they held the cookie fundraiser, in 2021, they sold 133 dozen cookies and raised $2,575, and last year that increased to 223 dozen cookies, bringing in $4,434 for the fund.

The goal this year is to surpass last year’s total and reach $5,000.

Jennie’s cousin approached the Weyburn Church of Christ, and they have donated the use of their kitchen this year, as they have two stoves and a lot of counter space, which will help with their baking project.

“MLHF means the world to us because Morgyn gets to hang out with and gets to know other children who have heart defects too. She feels normal and it’s all because of the camps that MLHF puts on,” said Jennie.

The Children’s Healthy-Heart Activity Monitoring Program in Saskatchewan, or CHAMPS Camp, is a program for children between the ages of seven and 17 years with congenital or acquired heart disease. CHAMPS brings children with cardiac conditions together in a supportive, safe environment that encourages them to build their confidence in physical activity participation and mental wellness.

The camp is funded primarily through the Mending Little Hearts Fund of Saskatchewan. There are also numerous sponsors throughout the year who help make the program possible.

“They teach them ways to cope with their defect, different strategies to help with anxiety they might get before any appointments or procedures and much more. Before being a part of this amazing group she didn’t realize how many other kids have special hearts like her,” said Jennie.

There is no set price for the cookies, as buyers pay by donation, and order by the dozen. To order, text 306-861-4580.

Buyers can pay by cash, e-transfer or by cheque, payable to the Mending Little Hearts Fund of Saskatchewan. People can also donate to the fund without buying any cookies, noted Jennie.

The Mending Little Hearts Fund allows people to make directed donations toward addressing the unmet needs of children living with heart conditions from all across Saskatchewan.
