WEYBURN – The Weyburn Comp’s Grade 10-12 music students departed after school on May 3 for their annual Spring Tour to Edmonton.
The group of 68 students and nine adults performed three concerts, attended two dinner theatres and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
Their first performance was for 350 students at St. Volodymyr School in Edmonton, for Kindergarten to Grade 8. The hour-long concert included music from the Senior Jazz Band and Concert Band under the direction of Brayden Jensen, and the Senior Choir and RISE Choir directed by Holly Butz.
The concert was well received as all the student body got to their feet to join in the finale, a medley of Queen songs, including “Another One Bites the Dust”, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions”.
In the evening, the Comp group was entertained to a dinner theatre performance of “Rock of Ages” at the Mayfield in Edmonton.
The students travelled to perform another two hours of music Friday morning and afternoon at Millgrove K-4 school in Spruce Grove, and Forrest Green K-6 school in Stoney Plain.
Principal Linda Madge-Arkinstall of Millgrove School shared a compliment to the staff and students of the WCS Music Department, saying, “I can’t imagine a better way for a school to start a Friday. They so beautifully entertained us this morning. It was fun, entertaining, thoughtful, and such a positive experience for all of us. Your students were respectful and such positive role models for our little ones.”
That evening the students dressed up and went to the Winspear Center, for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra's performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
The students visited the West Edmonton Mall for shopping, Water Park and Galaxyland rides on Saturday.
The trip concluded with the Jubilations dinner theatre performance of “Mama Mia” on Saturday evening.
“They had our students and chaperones dancing and acting along with the cast on and off the stage throughout the evening,” said Butz.
An Edsby poll of the various events from the trip revealed the Mama Mia dinner theatre was a definite highlight.
Next up for the Weyburn Comprehensive Music Department will be the Senior Musical production of “The Wedding Singer” on May 23-28.
