Tyler Fehrenbach: Carlyle Elementary School's new principal

Carlyle Elementary School's new principal, Tyler Fehrenbach, is not only the principal; he's a parent as well, and he aims to build a culture at the school that will make CES "just like a home setting." "We want our students to feel safe," he says.

Carlyle Elementary School's new principal, Tyler Fehrenbach, is not only the principal; he's a parent as well, and he aims to build a culture at the school that will make CES "just like a home setting."

"We want our students to feel safe," he says. "Especially with elementary kids, the fact that school is a safe place is one of the most important things for all of our children."

With 255 students from pre-Kindergarten to grade six, and with a son in grade three at CES, Fehrenbach wants to give each and every student the opportunity to "become a well-rounded individual and that includes their behavior, their attitude, academics and social skills."

"We want our children to be as involved as they can and to get a very good education," he says. "Obviously, academics are important and Math and English are the two main ones. They're going to be set back if they don't have those. However, we're not just here to hammer out the ABC's and the one-two-threes. If a child is hungry or has something else going on in their life, we need to address that, so they have the best chance to learn and succeed."

"We also try to help them with the little things, like manners," he adds. "And the big things we all have to learn, such as how to act when things don't go their way."

Along with an informal school breakfast program, CES offers after-school programs, sports and cultural opportunities, such as the upcoming week-long visit to the school by the Missoula Children's Theatre. A special spot within the school is 'The Hive', which is the office of Community Education Liason, Krystal Fehrenbach, whose job includes working to enhance relationships between the school, students, and their families.

CES is holding an open house and annual general meeting of the SCC (School Community Council) on Oct. 8 at the school. Fehrenbach invites all CES parents to attend.

"With a new principal and seven new teachers at the school, it's a great opportunity for parents to come out and to find out what's going on in the school. It's a chance for them to have a voice."
