Tradition with a twist: upcoming Dickens Festival meeting encourages new volunteers

Carlyle's Dickens Festival will be held on Dec. 5 and 6, but it's not too late to get involved, according to Dickens Committee chair, Shelley Slykhuis. "We're having a public planning meeting on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Hall.

Dickens has become a favourite of many and a destination event in Saskatchewan. Here Alyce Stockton and David Slykhuis smile for the camera at a past event. Committee chair Shelley Slykhuis (not pictured) is looking for volunteers to help the event continue to run smoothly and remain the success it has come to be.

We are looking for new ideas and new faces to help us continue the creation of a memorable weekend," says Slykhuis. "We'd also like to welcome newcomers and welcome back existing volunteers and encourage them to use their considerable talents in making the Dickens Festival one of Saskatchewan's premiere events."

The event is traditional, but never grows stale, according to Slykhuis. "The entire town is behind the festival," she says. "But we are more than happy to also welcome new volunteers, as well."

Slykhuis says that a big part of the annual weekend's continuing success is "our people."

"We are fortunate to have incredibly talented people in this area and because of them, the Dickens Festival is entering its 12th successful year. We welcome volunteers in any of the areas, but this year we'd love to welcome a few new teams of decorators prior to the event. People can join an existing team or even put one together on their own."

Slykhuis says: "Our vision is to showcase our area's people, organizations and businesses. We want our visitors to come back again and again."
