Town of Carlyle partners with big city community foundation

The town of Carlyle has recently partnered with the Saskatoon Community Foundation to manage funds, a bequest from the McQueen estate in hopes of developing its own foundation.

The town of Carlyle has recently partnered with the Saskatoon Community Foundation to manage funds, a bequest from the McQueen estate in hopes of developing its own foundation.

Don McQueen was a farmer who lived in the area for many years and according to the town's chief administrative officer, Huguette Lutz, he was always a community minded person. Upon his death, he left the Town of Carlyle over $63,000 from his estate. The money is now held in a trust with the Saskatoon Community Foundation. Lutz explained that this will enable the town to invest it's bequeath in a safe and secure fund, without the need to manage the investment themselves or registering as a stand-alone foundation. This she said will save the town money.

"At the end of the year or the beginning of 2014, the local Foundation Committee will meet to discuss whether there has been sufficient interest earned to allocate the interest to any group. It may well be that the funds will simply be reinvested until the fund builds up enough to make allocation of interest more worthwhile," she said.

She indicated that the members of council are currently sitting on this committee but they will soon ask Carlyle residents to take on the role of committee members of the foundation. This she said will allow the community to be involved in making decisions.

"Once this committee is established, it will determine the parameters for granting - who to grant to, what projects to support," Lutz said.

Community foundations are created to not only unify communities but are also a tool used to identify concerns within the community and find ways and means to address them.

Lutz further highlighted the benefits of the alliance with the Saskatoon Community Foundation saying the partnership means that the town of Carlyle will not only have its own foundation but the town will be able to accept further donations and bequeaths. This is a green light for anyone who wishes to make donations and she affirmed this saying the community can start to get involved at any time.

"If anyone is interested in making a donation or leaving a legacy, they can do so. The money would have to be donated to the Town of Carlyle, with specification that it goes to the foundation," she said.

"If the donor has a specific project that they wish to support, they can indicate that on their donation. Income tax receipts will be issued by the town, and the money will be forwarded to the Saskatoon Community Foundation to be added to our existing fund and managed by them."
