Since 1969 the beauty company Mary Kay has awarded pink cars to top-performing directors and sales associates across North America and recently a representative in southeast Saskatchewan.

Darlene Olsen is an independent senior sales director from Arcola who received a pink 2014 Ford Taurus at Merit Ford in Carlyle on Tuesday, May 6. The director and long-time consultant for Mary Kay credited earning the car to her strong team.

"I'm just as proud as punch - I'm just so proud of my unit and there's a couple of the gals in this area and we've got people from Mississauga to Vancouver Island and I'm just so proud of themteam work makes the dream work," she said.

When the program was first launched the company issued Cadillacs and over the years other brands such as Ford, BMW and Pontiac joined the Mary Kay fleet. This will make the 15th car Olsen has received since she joined the company in 1979.

She said receiving the pink car is much more exciting in comparison to past vehicles she received explaining it serves as advertising for the company she works with and said evidence of this was seen when it was being brought to Carlyle. "People saw this car coming on the semi, some of my customers were [messaging me] on Facebook saying 'Darlene I think your car is coming to Carlyle.' To me it's not just for myself but for my unit and for my consultants I work with and also for my customers. Its takes a whole lot of people to get this and for me it's not my car, it's our car," she said. Olsen has about 100 consultants in her unit across Canada and said it took the entire team to earn the car, a period which spans six months of sales.

"One person can't do it all by themselves, it's everybody as a team," she said.

"They're the best, I think that most of us get into this business for many different reasons and I feel that most of them are accomplishing what they want from Mary Kay, so, therefore that makes me happy."

Olsen indicated being one's own boss, as one of the advantages of being a part of Mary Kay. She said she started out in Regina and got married seven years later. She then moved to Arcola and didn't face the predicament of having to quit her job and start all over again. Olsen said there is freedom and flexibility in being a consultant but also spoke of her own experience when she first got started.
