Students receive bursaries from Matthewson & Co.

Matthewson & Co., has announced the recipients of their new annual bursaries.

CARLYLE - Matthewson & Co., a business located in Carlyle with a goal to help small communities reach their greatest potential, has announced the recipients of their new annual bursaries.

Avara Taralson Schaupmeyer and Jennifer Dann will both be receiving bursaries of $500.00 to go towards furthering their education.

Taralson Schaupmeyer, a recent graduate from Mayerthorpe, Alta., will be receiving the Post Secondary Student Bursary in order to pursue a career as a speech therapist for children. She will be studying linguistics with a minor in psychology at the University of Alberta.

Dann was the recipient of the Non-Traditional Student Bursary, which was to go to a person who had graduated high school earlier but wished to return to, or begin, post-secondary education. She is from Cowessess First Nation but currently lives in Strasbourg. Her goal is to study law at the University of Saskatchewan with the hopes of becoming a lawyer.

Anna Beaulieu, who helped create the bursaries and select the recipients from the application essays, explained that both recipients had sent out a public statement affirming their gratefulness for the bursaries.

Taralson Schaupmeyer expressed how grateful she was for the company’s efforts to alleviate financial pressures that many people face when trying to pursue higher education, but she especially expressed her gratitude for the bursary that would help her reach her own goals.

“I am so incredibly honoured to be this year's recipient of the Matthewson & Co. Post-Secondary Student Bursary; this support will truly be an immense aid to me as I pursue my studies, as it will help alleviate the massive financial burden that comes with receiving a post-secondary education, making it actually possible for me to go.”

Dann also explained how much this bursary would help with easing the extreme financial pressures that come with post-secondary education. Additionally, she explained that this bursary has given a boost to her determination to reach her goals and help others.

“This funding also encourages me to continue working towards my goals. When I have completed my education, I hope to help support students as well because I believe education is important for our future and financial strain can be an obstacle to someone completing their education. It is important to support each other.”

Matthewson & Co. will continue to offer these bursaries annually. Next year they also plan to double the amount for their bursary for a high school student aiming to start a business, which unfortunately had no recipient this year.
