While sitting at the town council meeting on March 18 the Town of Stoughton discovered they did not have a town flag.
Many towns around the world have a town flag, which embodies the community spirit while representing some of the major industries or histories of the town.
"One of the councillors was wondering what our flag looked like and we discovered we didn't have one," Mayor Bill Knous explained. "So we all decided that we should have one."
Originally the councillors spoke about having youth present ideas, but eventually decided to open the flag design competition to everyone in the community.
For those looking to submit an idea, designs are to be dropped off at the town office by June 1 as the town will unveil the winning submission at Stoughton Daze in July.
In addition to the satisfaction of creating the new flag, the winner will also win a prize although the town is currently unsure what exactly the prize will be.
"A prize for someone aged 85 would be different than for someone in elementary school," Knous said, thus the prize will be tailored somewhat to the winner and will remain a mystery.
Though they had not fully discussed how the winner would be chosen Knous thought that town council would help find the top contenders, a community poll may be another option, while a combination of the two is also possible.
Ultimately the town wanted to start getting people to think about what they would submit and to start working on their products as they are under a deadline with wanting the flag to be unveiled during Stoughton Daze.
Excited to see what the community comes up with, the town council looks forward to submissions coming in.
Some communities in the area have flags such as Weyburn, which depicts Weyburn's Coat of Arms while symbolizing the prairie sky with blue, a nod to the oilfield industry with black bars, a golden wheat head representing agriculture, a gold cogged wheel to signify transportation, as well as the city's water tower placed at the top of the symbol showcasing the early infrastructure of the community.
The City of Estevan also has a flag which is black and gold, the black signifying coal and oil, while the gold is a celebration of agriculture. The city's crest with a coal tipple, oil derrick, electricity, and natural gas is then affixed to the flag depicting the four main industries that has led Estevan to thrive, while a maple leaf sits in the top left corner showing its roots within Canada.
These types of symbolism along with immense thought and care were put into the cities' flags, which the town of Stoughton is hoping for from their community.
