Volunteers are busy people. They have jobs, businesses, families, hobbies, and yet they somehow give their time for the betterment of their communities and the life within. Our volunteers don't look for recognition or monetary rewards, and without their dedication to their communities, our lives would be sadly lacking.

Randy Stigings is one man who is leaving his footprints in the sand so to speak. Stigings was the recipient of the 2011-2012 SaskEnergy Volunteer Championship award.

This award is made annually on Minor Hockey Day to a deserving individual in the community who has worked to promote local hockey either as a coach, an official, a team manager, or an association organizer in his or her community.

The Saskatchewan Hockey Association and SaskEnergy have joined together on this award and each year ask all local associations to select a person in the community who volunteers his or her time and consistently puts the community ahead of themselves in their efforts to make the community a better place for all and for the hockey community in particular.

Stigings, with the support of his family, has performed endless hours of service to the hockey community. His organizational and coaching skills over the years have contributed greatly to the many players who have passed through the minor hockey program.

Whether it's on the ice, in the box, cheering the kids on from the stands, or working on improvements to the Carlyle Sports Arena - you will find Stiging's mark as one of the leaders and supporters of minor hockey and youth in the community.

The involvement of our youth plays a significant role in keeping our communities alive. Encouraging the young people to continue to be involved in sports, recreation, culture and community affairs ensures a vibrant future for any community.

Stigings has spent considerable time volunteering with the Carlyle Sports Arena and the Minor Hockey Association over the years in different capacities. He is currently the president of the Carlyle Sports Arena. And when needed, Stigings can also run the zamboni and perform the regular maintenance around the rink. A man of many talents who is able to switch gears and perform the task at hand. Whether it is physical work that has to be done or an encouraging word to a player who otherwise was perhaps on the verge of giving up - Stigings in his quiet way is there with his talents. Our volunteers are special people. They are part of the force that keeps rural Saskatchewan alive and prospering.

Krista Ruckaber, treasurer of Carlyle Minor Hockey and the Carlyle Sports Arena was on hand to present Stigings with his award.

Congratulations Randy on receiving this well-deserved award.
