On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the town of Carlyle council members met for their bi-monthly meeting to discuss various topics regarding the town.
Town wins prize during Dickens, donates back to committee
During the Dickens Festival the town entered a float into the parade. Placing second on the Friday night of the event and winning a cash prize the town decided to donate the money back to the Dickens Committee.
Application for airport grant supported
The airport is currently looking to extend its runway, as well as a data collection platform invisibility sensor and a pressure/temperature system. The town as authorized the application process of applying for a CAP (Community Airport Partnership) Grant. The CAP program focuses on rehabilitation and upgrades needed at community airports.
Risk report recommendations to be followed
In September a risk report was performed by the town's insurance company on the water treatment plant. Recently the company has given the town recommendations to ensure safety at the plant.
The town will be following these recommendations which includes an exterior outlet being changed, putting bollards around the infrastructure, placing metres at the back, and putting up a gate at the loading ramp.
These small additions have been authorized and will be completed in the near future.
Snow removal
The town has been actively removing snow and sanding icy areas, but have found difficulties surrounding this topic. Much of the evening focused on this issue. With complaints about snow removal coming into the town office the councilors spoke about how quickly snow removal happens. In the end the town decided to stick to its policy of clearing Main Street and accessing the RCMP as well as the ambulance. Upon this being finished the work crew will then move onto residential streets as they are able to.
The town currently has three employees on staff and this makes it difficult to remove snow as quickly as is expected by some because these town employees also have other work duties to perform. Thus, they will continue with the policy already in place.
There was also discussion of vehicles and trailers being left on the street, which have been making snow removal difficult.
