Sparky’s Scrap Metal Recycling is a Manor-based business that buys and sells recyclable scrap metal of any kind. The business is owned and operated by Mark and Tara Preston.
Sparky’s came to be after the salvage outgrew Mark’s towing company, and it was decided to have two separate businesses, each identifiable for the type of work both of the enterprises do, and to be more distinguishable to the customers that they serve.
Sparky’s first began operating as separate company in June 2019.
As many business were affected by the pandemic, Sparky’s actually benefitted somewhat, with less traffic on the road and fewer vehicle accidents. There was more time for the Prestons to devote to the recycling business. Less time in the tow truck allowed a lot more free time to organize things to manage the recycling more efficiently.
This provided needed time to separate different metals to ship and get the product to buyers, as well as more time to haul in recovered scrap metal.
The scrap metal that Sparky’s recovery usually comes from an area within 100 kilometres of their location and market value determines what is salvageable for a profit.
Much like the towing enterprise, the business is operating at almost at anytime of the day and everyday of the week throughout the year.
The recycling business can be full of surprises and interesting finds and unexpected events, like when a family of foxes was discovered once, when removing an old vehicle.
Unexpected treasures can be found as well. Once they found a Johann Falk Nuremberg magic lantern, which is a projector [complete with hand painted slides] from the early 1900’s. Another very unique treasure was a promotional folding ruler used to advertise Geo Newton’s Blacksmith shop that was home to Carlyle, also dating back to the early 1900s.
The Prestons have an estimated 400,000 pounds of metal to process at present, with more being brought home almost every day, so the heavy lifting will continue for some time.
