On Wednesday, April 2, the 25th Annual Contractor Safety Awareness Association's breakfast was hosted in Carlyle Memorial Hall.
Held by the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) in cooperation with the Contractor Safety Awareness Association (CSAA) the breakfast saw approximately 120 individuals attend.
Following breakfast at 7:30 a.m. a safety video was shown as a way to remind professionals to be safe while working and not cut corners.
Invited guests included construction workers, supervisors, business owners, rural municipalities, emergency responders, and anyone associated with working around above ground lines or ground lines.
This particular event was not only hosted in Carlyle but across Saskatchewan in 29 communities with four of these events in the southeast including Oxbow, Estevan, Weyburn, and Assiniboia.
According to Jeff Yanko, with Enbridge a company a part of the CSAA, explained it is an important program to present this time of year.
"The program reaches roughly 5,000 to 6,000 people across Saskatchewan who are involved with the digging community," Yanko stated. "One of the biggest changes with this group is actually the amalgamation with the Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance which makes the association stronger and able to touch so many more people."
"I've been involved for the past five years and it's become like a tradition with Safety Awareness Month being in April. It's a way to kick off the new excavation season."
As short safety video clips and commercials played while people ate, the main messages of the day included "Call before you dig," and "Look up and live." The latter bringing attention to overhead lines when moving equipment and the former which brings attention to underground lines that have become much more common than they have in the past.
Injury prevention is key in Saskatchewan as the province sees approximately 1.4 times as many deaths as compared with any other province in Canada according to the main safety video shown.
The main video also contained testimonials of people who have seen what happens when procedures are not followed properly or are completely ignored.
A simple safety reminder the breakfast was successful in bringing in people who work in the digging community and placing emphasis on working safely.
As everyone left the hall they were given work gloves and a safety card depicting the different colours of flags associated with the different lines.
Last year close to 4,500 workers attended across Saskatchewan from over 1,200 companies and it has become an annual safety reminder in the spring.
