Forget is a small village with huge community beliefs. It is because of this that the Forget village council has decided to go ahead and attempt to build an outdoor rink for their community in hopes it can bring the people together in a safe way during COVID restrictions.
鈥淲e are trying to build a town square kind of thing where the community can gather and perhaps even get some more tourism in our town,鈥 said Michele Amy, a member of the Forget council.
The council approached a local resident with some extra land north of the village鈥檚 current playpark and Mayor Leon Gilbertson asked this individual for permission to use the land for their outdoor rink project. The individual gave their consent and now the council is planning this project with the help of some local farmers.
鈥淚 have such admiration for farmers, they always have such out of the box ideas. They are smart thinkers. We had two on our team at the last meeting and they proposed a very cheap or perhaps even free solution to how we were going to build this rink鈥 Amy explains.
Melissa Gowan, a local farmer, will be supplying 100 foot grain bags to build the structure of the rink. The idea is to roll the large grain bags, which cannot be reused for grain, out and forming them how they want to build the foundation and structure of the rink.
The next steps of course would be to add some outdoor lights and benches and perhaps a wind structure of some sort. They had originally wanted to build a warming shack but due to COVID restrictions this is not an option at this time.
鈥淚f all goes good we are hoping to make it a permanent addition to the village where people can stay active and play outside in the fresh air,鈥 Amy explains.
