As Saskatchewan students go back to school on Sept. 8, there’s a stark contrast in the number of COVID-19 cases in this province compared to our neighbours to the south.
On Sept. 7, Saskatchewan had 58 active cases, up from its recent low of 29 cases on Sept. 2, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.
But North Dakota, whose population of 760,000 is roughly 422,000 fewer than Saskatchewan’s 1,182,000, reported 2,264 active cases of COVID-19.
North Dakota had 39 times more active COVID-19 cases than Saskatchewan, for a population that is 35.7 per cent smaller.
On Sept. 8, Saskatchewan reported seven new cases and seven more recoveries, while North Dakota reported on Sept. 8 it had 75 new cases and 206 recoveries.
On Sept. 4, North Dakota had 2,440 active cases, an all-time high, and 778 more cases than Saskatchewan has had since mid-March.
The Canada-U.S. border remains closed to all but essential traffic until Sept. 21, a status that has been renewed month-to-month since the beginning of the crisis.
