Newalta's Alida facility has been awarded the Newalta vice president award for the second consecutive year.

The Alida based Newalta facility became a two-time winner of the company's national safety award on Thursday, March 27th.

The Calgary based waste management company hands out the vice president's award to facilities that demonstrate commitment to the company's safety and environment programs each year. Branch manager of the facility Kelly Matt said the branch is honoured to be a two time winner of the award and the recognition is a highlight for the Alida facility.

"It feels awesome; it's actually a pretty big award within our company and kind of puts us at the top of the few facilities for Newalta, so it's a pretty big achievement for us," she said.

She also said the award demonstrates that the employees at the facility are engaged and take ownership of their environment, health and safety program.

"Our team is always looking for new ways to improve the way we do things," she said.

The Alida facility focuses on oilfield waste treatment and processing, specifically recycling and recovering materials from drilling mud, wastewater and solids that have been contaminated by spills. There are 85 facilities spread across the United States and Canada with a portfolio of more than 250 operating permits within the industry. In 2013 the Alida facility started some initiatives which were factors that led to the facility being recognized this year.

According to a company release they "indentified and documented preventative maintenance measures for each piece of equipment that included trouble shouting, procedures and diagrams to minimize the risk of injuries and environment- related incidents. And developed and distributed orientation packages to all 3rd party transportation suppliers to educate every driver on facility procedures and ensure all safety and environmental precautions are taken while loading and unloading materials."

Matt said the facility's safety performance record in the last two years has been clean with no recordable incidents or injuries. She attributed this to the facility's attention to detail and highlighted other areas that the facility tries to keep up to standard.

"We keep this facility very clean, neat and tidy. Everybody that comes through on our tour seems to notice that" she said.

Newalta opened the Alida branch six years ago and has a staff compliment of seven people. Matt praised the company highlighting the advantage of working at the facility.

"I think it's an excellent company to work for and we're able to be more on the environmental side of the oil field," she said.
