Who is your political hero?
Prime Minister John Diefenbaker.
What inspired you to enter the election race?
My children. Like any father, I want to see them thrive. I believe this is the best way to directly impact their future, and to ensure a brighter tomorrow for future generations.
What topics are most important to you in this federal election?
Our country’s financial future, jobs, government accountability, and respect for the Canadian farmer and our oil and gas industry.
Are you concerned about the short campaign time line for this election?
I am more concerned that this was an unnecessary election. Our country is in crisis -government should be focused on saving Canadians trapped in Afghanistan, helping our fellow citizens displaced by wildfires, and helping farmers suffering through severe drought conditions. I recognize that two of these three issues are western based so I don’t think they cross Mr. Trudeau’s mind.
What supports, if any, do you feel are needed to help businesses and residents with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic?
The Conservative platform has many programs to help residents and businesses directly. One of my favourites is the Main Street Tax Credit. This will provide a 25 per cent tax credit on amounts of up to $100,000 that Canadians personally invest in a small business over the next two years. This is literally neighbours helping one another, which is the Canadian way.
What, if any, agricultural federal programs and initiatives do you feel are necessary to help support farmers and ranchers in this year’s conditions?
I believe that we need a suite of reliable federal programs to ensure agriculture is sustainable. The Conservative’s commitment to the Lake Diefenbaker Irrigation Project, will not only drive recovery for Saskatchewan but help to secure our long-term food supply. Once completed, it will create 2,500 jobs and support the growth of diverse, high-value crops, which will generate significant returns for producers in the province. More importantly, the project will reduce the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather and improve climate resiliency. This would be one of the largest infrastructure investments in Saskatchewan’s history.
Is there an issue that people are focusing too much?
Frankly, I actually think that all issues are important and an election is the perfect time to debate them.
Is there an issue that doesn’t get enough attention?
Agricultural issues don’t get the attention that they deserve. I think that there are some folks out east that don’t understand where the food on their plate actually comes from.
Why did you choose to run for your particular party?
The Conservative Party for me represents how I was raised and the work ethic I was taught on our family farm. On the farm you are responsible for your own success. There were no silver spoons in my kitchen!
What is the biggest issue facing your party’s chance at success?
I believe the answer to this question is complicated, but if I had to pick one issue it would be voter turnout. I think it is important that everyone takes the time to review the platform for all the political parties. I am confident when they do, they will agree with me that the Conservative plan is the best.
How will you engage and encourage young voters to participate in this election?
Prior to the election, we had a number of social events geared towards the youth in our riding. This was an opportunity for them to learn about the electoral process and what role they might want to play. Further, it gave them the opportunity to understand the Conservative’s vision of the future for Canada, because it will affect them the most.
What is your party’s leader’s biggest flaw?
To be honest, I think he’s a pretty decent guy. He has Canadians best interest at heart and will not deviate from his beliefs just to win votes.
Once elected, your job is to represent your entire riding. How do you plan on representing individuals who didn’t vote for you?
Frankly, I have no trouble representing everyone and I have always reached out twice a month asking for feedback on a variety of issues. I read the responses and act upon them.
What informs your political stance? What books, publications, relationships or experiences?
The constituents of Regina Lewvan guide me daily, whether it's phone calls, emails, Facebook or dropping in for a coffee, they are comfortable in sharing their thoughts and appreciate hearing all perspectives.
What local project or service would you advocate for more federal spending?
Removing the track from the ring road and ensuring that our RCMP Heritage Museum receives national designation for it to be considered the westernmost national museum in the country.
What is something people don’t know about you?
I BBQ the best steak in all of Regina!
