Massive metal pod passes through Carlyle

Passing through Carlyle at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 26, was a super load, a metal pod – used in the oil industry within the refining and extraction section of oil sands operations – being transported from Oxbow to Whitewood. The massive unit would continue on to Fort MacMurray.

Mike Banting, the Operations Manager, with Sarens Canada Inc. was excited by the project, which saw two semi tractors hauling the two-part metal pod.

The metal pod, which was fabricated by Saskarc, stands 9 metres tall, 7.4 metres wide, and 65 metres long, while it weighs in at 600,000 lbs; thus, making it quite the sight on the road.

“It’s quite something to see on the road, something that large,” Banting said.

A unit of that size brings with it challenges along the route including power lines, but Banting said that SaskPower ensured safe passage.

“SaskPower is helping in Saskatchewan with getting under power lines, they’ve been very good,” Banting said.

Sarens specializes in heavy lifting and engineered transport, which is why Banting was particularly excited about the project.
