A prosperous little town less than 10 minutes west of Carlyle, Arcola has been noted for the specialty businesses it has acquired over the years and The Hungry Moose Caf茅 & Bakery can be added to that list with their official opening on Oct. 27.
As with all niche businesses in our quaint Saskatchewan towns, diversity is the key to thriving and surviving. New owner and operator Tricia Colpitts has the diversity needed to provide the services the community needs.
Approval for four tables with seating for 20 at this time, the Hungry Moose will allow for sit down, take out and even a delivery service within the town. Regular hours will be Monday-Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., with delivery available from 5-8 p.m.
鈥淚 just want to offer homemade options that people can read and know the ingredients in,鈥 Colpitts detailed. 鈥淲e want to cater all types of functions, make cakes for all celebrations and offer specialty food options like gluten free, diabetic and even keto options if there is a need. I have the smoker going for things like pulled pork and will be making homemade pizza, burgers, French fries and onion rings.鈥
This dream had been burbling up in Tricia for many years since her time with Francis Spry, who used to own the Chaparral restaurant in Arcola. Together they would work in the kitchen at the curling rink and cater many town events where Colpitts started as a 鈥済o-for鈥 and helping her run the show.
Although Spry has been gone for many years, the memories of working alongside her at the age of 11 still bring Colpitts great joy.
鈥淔rancis babysat me when I was little and taught me so much like doughnut spread, how to make pies and I have always enjoyed cooking. She is a big reason why I am here today.鈥
Cooking, making cakes for her family and friends, while searching, testing and collecting time-honoured family recipes has brought this entrepreneur to the place where she is sharing her love and talent with the local communities. As with any business startup, Colpitts will continue to do books and company management with Colpitts Agencies out of Carlyle as needed until things take off.
The inspiration for the name, The Hungry Moose Caf茅 & Bakery, has come from the beauty of and proximity to the Moose Mountain Provincial Park. Along with a consistent caf茅, bakery, catering and food delivery options, Colpitts is planning to have a seasonal food truck up at the lake by next summer. Check out the new digs at 201 Main Street in Arcola on the main floor of the High House building.
