HEALTHY CAMPUS SASKATCHEWAN SUPPORTS THE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING OF POST- SECONDARY STUDENTS

The Government of Saskatchewan, in partnership with post-secondary education partners across the province, launched a collaborative initiative today to support student health and wellbeing.

Healthy Campus Saskatchewan
brings 19 post-secondary institutions together to provide students with the knowledge, tools and support resources they need to achieve their personal and academic goals.

鈥淪askatchewan鈥檚 post-secondary institutions have made a clear commitment to addressing student mental health and wellness,鈥 Advanced Education Minister Gene Makowsky said.聽 鈥淏y working together, we can achieve better outcomes for our students, and for our province.鈥

鈥淭his initiative will lay the groundwork that will help us provide the best support possible to our post-secondary students,鈥 Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors and Rural and Remote Health Minister Everett Hindley said.聽 鈥淚t is especially appropriate this year, in light of the additional mental wellness challenges faced by our students in adjusting to the pandemic while they continue their education.鈥

In 2020-21, the Ministry of Advanced Education and the Ministry of Health are providing combined funding of $130,000 to help support this work.

The main areas of focus for Healthy Campus Saskatchewan include mental health, suicide awareness and prevention, sexual violence prevention, substance use, pandemic responses, and inclusive environments.

鈥淭he key benefit of this partnership is the ability to share resources, information and ideas,鈥 Healthy Campus Saskatchewan spokesperson Bev Drew said.聽 鈥淗ealthy Campus Saskatchewan will work to advance the conversation around student health and wellbeing to help us be more proactive in addressing the evolving needs of students in the province.鈥

As part of the Healthy Campus Saskatchewan launch, a Launch and Learn event,聽Better Together: A New Era for Post-Secondary Health and Wellbeing in Saskatchewan, is being hosted today, followed by additional activities this week.
