Over the last few years teachers have noticed an increase in the sleepiness of students during the day. We are concerned that students are not getting enough sleep. One possible reason may be the phenomenon of students texting in the middle of the night. Teenagers feel an overwhelming need to keep in contact with peers and they will find it hard to resist not texting at night. Most students feel an obligation to respond when they get a text. If left unchecked, the need for teens to be constantly available is coming at a cost of their emotional and physical health. Texting throughout the night leads to sleep deprivation and it is associated with health concerns. You can check your son/daughter's texting times to see when texting occurs. Please take the time to observe this. If texting is going on that interferes with a good continuous sleep, you may have to take the cell phone away at night. It will still be there in the morning.
