Last week, G.F. Kells students participated in a variety of activities to help raise money for cancer research. A brave and compassionate G.F. Kells student, Lee-Amber Laderoute, organized these events as a way of celebrating her birthday. There was an auction and a "Throw a Wet Sponge at a Teacher" event. The noon hour ended with Lee-Amber having her head shaved. Her hair will be donated to a charity which makes wigs for cancer victims.

On the afternoon of December 5th, Chris Henderson will be putting on a concert for the G.F. Kells students. Henderson is a recording artist who used to teach in Carlyle.

A volleyball camp is being offered by Lee Carter, the Head Coach of the Brandon University Women's Volleyball Team, on December 10th & 11th. Interested individuals should contact Mr. Birch at the school.

The Junior and Senior Drama Clubs continue to meet Monday evenings. They are looking forward to competing at the Regional festival in the spring.

Grade 11 and 12 students who signed up to go to Globe Theatre this year are getting excited that December is here. They will be seeing an evening performance of Robin Hood on December 14.

Just a reminder to parents that the School Community Council's next meeting is January 11, 2012, at the high school. The meeting starts at 7:00. Parents are needed in order to provide input into the policies of our school and to help facilitate communication within the larger community. With the support of our school community council, we have made significant improvements to math over the last few years and now we are looking towards improving literacy rates as well. Parental support by attending our school community council is needed.

The male members of the high school staff are fundraising for prostate cancer research by participating in a Movember Moustache Growing Contest. The losers of the fundraiser will all receive pies to the face. Make your donation at the school to cast your vote for the best moustache.

The 2010-2011 Yearbooks were handed out last week. Planning for the 2011-2012 yearbook has already started! Local businesses can have a business-card size advertisement placed in the yearbook for $20 or they can sponsor a photo page for $30. Half-page and full-page advertisements are also available. If you are interested in placing an ad in the GFK yearbook please contact Melissa Sweet for details. If anyone has taken pictures of GFK students which might be of interest to the Yearbook Committee, please email them to Melissa Sweet at [email protected] so the pictures can be included in the 2011-2012 yearbook. The 2010/2011 yearbooks will be available in mid-November.

Anyone who is interested in advertising on the school's virtual signs should contact Mr. Howe at the school. For all of your Gordon F. Kells news and updates, check out the new virtual signs or visit our school blog at gfkells.wordpress.com!
