Gordon F. Kells High School Cougar Corner

Congratulations to the GF Kells Cross Country runners who competed in Carnduff last week. It was a cold, miserable day, but that didn't slow down our group. There were over 650 competitors at the meet and some categories had over 80 entries.

The Rookie Boys had their first games last week in Manor. They had a bit of a slow start but ended up winning the last two games. From the beginning of the match until the end there was vast improvement. By the time you read this we will have hosted Redvers on the 10th. Our next game is in Carlyle on the 17th against Manor. We have two away games coming up on Oct. 31 and Nov. 5. Parents please let Mrs. Beaver know if you can drive.

Mrs. Beaver and the Rookie Boys are practicing Mondays and Wednesdays after school.

Mr. Birch and the Intermediate Girls continue to practice weekday evenings.

Ms. Maher, Mrs. Reaves, and the Rookie Girls continue to practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.

Mrs. Biberdorf and her Home Economics class would appreciate any used tape measures and scrap fabric for her classes. If you have any around your place and you would like to donate them to GFK please contact Mrs. Bieberdorf. A big thank you goes out to Marie McConnell for her donation of games and material scraps to our school.

Parent and community members are needed for our School Community Council. Our next School Community Council meeting will be held Wednesday, October 17, 2004. The meeting will begin at 7:00 P.M. At this meeting we will be looking for parents or community members to become part of the council. Council members will be meeting eight more times this year for approximately 1.5 hours each meeting. Your involvement in our school is a critical part of how we involve our community in the planning that is so necessary for our school success. As a member, your feedback is very essential in terms of our programming at this school. As well, we will be needing community members' advice as we move forward in the construction of a K - 12 school in Carlyle. The architectural design process has started and we will need community members to participate. Please plan to be here October 17; your help is needed.

In order to provide more support to students excelling in math or struggling in math, our school is currently using a "fluid streaming" system. This involves placing students into math groups where they will receive instruction more in line with their needs. For information on how we are doing this, I would invite all parents of our grade 7 & 8 students to come to our school on Wednesday, October 17, 2012. We will explain the process for grouping students and how parents can support their son or daughter in this program.

If you have any old tools in GOOD condition, the high school shop is looking for donations!

Please contact Miss Wiebe if you would like to make a donation!

The school is looking for games to be used within the Workplace and Apprenticeship 10, 20, and 30 courses. They are to be used in outcomes within the courses to help develop spatial reasoning, numerical reasoning and logical reasoning. If you have any of the following games that your family has outgrown or is willing to donate to the school, we would really appreciate it. Just bring them in to the office! Games we are looking for are: Rubik's Cube, Blokus, chess, checkers, backgammon, Mastermind, Connect Four, Battleship, Cathedral World, Yahtzee, cribbage, Reverse.

Student Leadership Team Report: Mariah Blohm, Kacey Valentine, Desiray Weber, Brook Zacharias, Britney Vogel, and Emily Klatt attended the Canadian Student Leadership Conference. The conference was an amazing opportunity for the girls. They attended workshops that allowed them to learn about themselves as an individual and as a leader. They gained the knowledge that as our youth, they can be leaders and have an impact on our school, community, country, and the world. The girls came home empowered to make a difference at all levels. Mrs. Rutten was extremely impressed by the girls and their enthusiasm during the week long conference. She can hardly wait to take the girls to next year's national conference in PEI!
