It's back to business at GFK with classes and extra-curricular.
This year at Gordon F. Kells School, we are piloting a new program called "Homework Hall of Fame." Our goal is to significantly improve the completion rates of homework in our school. We know this will improve student learning and success. The "Homework Hall of Fame" program consists of acknowledging all homework handed in on or before the due date. Teachers will give each student a Homework Completion Ticket for each on-time completed assignment. The student will then turn their ticket in to Mr. Saltel, who will, in turn, congratulate the student and place their ticket into the grade appropriate box. At the end of each month, during our Wednesday assembly, one ticket will be drawn for each grade and those students will receive a prize. Our hope is that the Homework Hall of Fame will encourage positive work ethic and the value of meeting deadlines, both of which are necessary life skills.
The Cross Country Team and the Golf Team started practicing last week. Cross Country is after school Monday - Thursday. The District Meet for grades 9-12 is in Carnduff on September 24 and for grades 7 and 8 is in Weyburn on October 1. The Provincial Meet for advancing grade 9-12 students is in Kamsack on Oct.4.
Rookie boys' and junior boys' volleyball will be practicing Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:20.
The first tournament of the year for the Sr. Girls Volleyball Team was in Oxbow on Sept. 5 and 6. On Friday, they suffered a loss to Oxbow, but beat Indian Head. On Saturday, they beat Moosomin and Manor. The girls came out of their pool in 2nd place. They played Langenburg in the quarter finals and won 2 sets, 25 - 21 and 25 - 22. Then they played a very tough Estevan Elecs in the semi-finals and lost 11 - 25 and 16 - 25. The squad is looking awesome at this point and they can't wait for the Arcola tournament next weekend!
