GF Kells Cougar Corner: Anti-bullying day huge success

On Wednesday, April 13, the students of both the high school and the elementary school took part in an Anti-Bullying Day at CES.

On Wednesday, April 13, the students of both the high school and the elementary school took part in an Anti-Bullying Day at CES. To start the day, organizers had Rider Defensive Lineman Luc Mullinder speak to the students about what bullying is, why it occurs, and what to do about it. The audience was captivated by Mullinder and his message. Mullinder surprised organizers by bringing along Defensive Back Tad Kornegay to help with the presentation. The Riders stuck around for the afternoon to interact with the students and take part in the events. The elementary school looked absolutely amazing! Pink is the colour of the anti-bullying campaign and so the entire interior of the school was pink: pink balloons, pink streamers, pink bulletin boards, pink doors, and pink posters. Organizers also handed out pink T-shirts to ALL students in attendance. It truly was a "Sea of Pink." The Carlyle Bakery even donated pink buns for the hot dog lunch. After lunch, high school students paired with elementary students and took part in sidewalk chalk drawing, Silent Ball, skipping, Balloon in the Air, relay races, and skipping. After the activities, students and staff created a giant people heart and then a human chain, with everyone holding hands, stretching from one school to the other. It was amazing to see students of all ages interacting positively together. The message "One Colour, One Purpose, One Community" was truly felt at the event. Thank you so much to all of the people who volunteered their time and energy to this worthy cause. A special thanks goes out to Mr.Laforette, Mrs. Roy-Brown, and Mr.Birch who together organized this amazing day.

This past week was Spirit Week at G.F. Kells and the students did a terrific job showing their school spirit by dressing up for Twin Day, Rabbit Day, Tight and Bright Day, PJ Day, and of course Pink Day. The school's doors also looked great all decorated with Pink Anti-Bullying Day messages.

The "Wii Dance Experience" at lunch had a guest dancer last week. Mr. Fehrenbach shook his stuff to the sounds of Boney M. Though he didn't beat the student competitor, he did entertain the students by trying.

The students and staff who attended the Cornerstone Theatre Group's play Exit the Body thoroughly enjoyed this hilarious comedy.

Badminton continues with rookie and junior practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00. So far, the rookies and juniors have had home exhibition games with Wawota and Manor. They have also travelled to Arcola and Manor for exhibition games. The rookies and juniors will have their Regional Playoffs on Wednesday, April 20 (Rookies in Arcola and Juniors in Carlyle), and Division Playoffs on Saturday, May 7 (Rookies in Maryfield and Juniors in Carnduff). Rookies should remember to get in their permission forms to attend the April 20th event in Arcola. Please contact Miss Down or Mr. Zacharias if you have any questions. Senior Badminton is currently underway. Practices are scheduled for Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:00, but additional practices will be added in the coming weeks. For more information in regards to Senior Badminton please call Mr. Fehrenbach.

Parents are reminded to be judicious when selecting family vacation times during the school year. It is incredibly difficult for senior years' students to catch up in semesterized courses upon their return, especially when they've been away for 10 school days. Examination times are especially delicate. Provincial exams can only be written on specified days and at the specified times. There are no exceptions.

There will be no classes on Friday, April 22, and no classes from April 25 to 29. Classes resume Monday, May 2.

Anyone who is interested in advertising on the school's virtual signs should contact Mr. Howe at the school.
