Family and friends of the late John Green gathered to celebrate his life and to dedicate a gazebo as a permanent fixture in his memory at the Carlyle Golf Club.

Family and friends gathered in memory of a loved one at the Carlyle Golf Course on Sept. 10. Individuals were on hand to participate in the dedication of a gazebo in memory of John Green, who was an active member of the Carlyle Golf Club. Those in attendance also participated in the first annual John Green Memorial Tournament.

The dedication of the gazebo started with an introduction by Martin Tourand at 11 a.m. People gathered around as Tourand spoke a few words of the late John Green. "I'm sure most of you knew John and for those that didn't, John was a past board member and avid golfer here in Carlyle. He passed away Sept. 3, 2009. John was a great volunteer here around the club. With our expansion of the club and the clubhouse here, John donated his expertise."

Kind and heartfelt words were also given by Beth Corrigan from the previous Talisman Social Club and George Anderson from the Knights of Columbus.

Irene Green, wife of the late John, closed the ceremony by thanking all of the individuals who took part in the day and made the dedication possible. "This is definitely an honour for me and would have been for John."

Following the words of remembrance, a ribbon was cut by Irene to signify the dedication of the gazebo. Tourand said "I dedicate this gazebo as a permanent tribute to our co-worker and our friend, John Green. Its home will be on hole number five."

When speaking with those in attendance, it was very clear that fond memories are held of the individual. Tourand said "John Green was a very valuable member to our course. He was a part of the board for a number of years. When we built our new clubhouse here a few years ago, it was with his expertise. He did a lot out here for us throughout the years. As a golfer, he was out here once the snow came off the ground until the snow flew."

The special day came about as the result of collaboration between a number of groups. "The Talisman Social Club contacted us and wanted to do something, so we got in contact with Gordon F. Kells who decided they could build it for us" said Tourand. "And from there, it snowballed. John was a Knights of Columbus member as well, a lifetime member from what I understand. So they ended up contributing as well. It's been about a year and a half in the making. This tournament is called the John Green Memorial tournament. This is our first year with it, and we are probably going to try and make it a yearly event."
