Don Werseen and Marg Walker, a couple from Manitoba, enjoy attending craft shows together as it gives two retirees something to keep busy with.

Saturday, Oct. 26, saw people amass in the Wawota Town Hall for the first annual Trade Show and Kids' Halloween Party.

Organizer, Kayla McMullen, explained, "We thought it would be something fun for the kids to do and the adults would be able to shop at the trade show."

Though initially unsure of the outcome, McMullen decided to go through with organizing the event to see how it would go over.

"I had no idea how it would go or anything or if it would go well; but, hopefully each year will get better and better," she stated. "A lot are saying it's better than they were expecting."

A total of 18 vendors arrived providing numerous options for Christmas gifts this year.

"I was happy with 15 [vendors], but 18 is great and we can only fit about 25 in here comfortably, so it's a good turnout," McMullen said.

Two vendors attending that day were Marg Walker and Don Werseen. Walker and Werseen moved from Alberta to Manitoba 10 years ago to retire. Werseen sold knives out of their restaurant before leaving Alberta, but once the restaurant was sold farmers' markets and craft sales provided the couple an opportunity to work side by side selling products they're passionate about.

Werseen sells Rada Cutlery, which was something he found he enjoyed while in the restaurant business, and Walker brings a large display of home baked goods. Walker makes everything from pies to buns to Christmas goodies, including nearly 600 Christmas cakes each year.

With help from the local Lighthorse 4-H Club everyone filtering through the hall was able to enjoy a BBQ lunch.

The idea came to McMullen who came up with the event through memories of her childhood.

"I thought there wasn't a lot going on in Wawota or the area like this," McMullen explained. "I grew up in Moosomin and I remember going to Fleming where they always had something like this and I loved it, so I wanted to do something for the kids here."

For the first Trade Show and Kids' Halloween Party to be held, it was a great success. McMullen hopes to continue the success and grow attendance of the event.

"I've already got ideas for next year, we were planning on a hayride this year but with harvest so late I didn't want to bother anyone; so, next year we're hoping to include a hayride and some other fun ideas," McMullen exclaimed.

This year, though, there were a number of fun activities for youth to take part in from face painting to a variety of games. With prizes to be won the kids thoroughly enjoyed dressing up in their costumes and partaking in the entertainment.
