Cold temperatures and a harsh wind, resulting in an extreme windchill Family Day (Feb. 21) morning, did not deter people from venturing outdoors at Moose Mountain Provincial Park to partake in various planned activities.
As the sun came out and warmed up the afternoon, approximately 150 people came to enjoy the Family Day event.
"There were families from as far away as Regina and Moose Jaw," explains Sarah Schafer, who organized the Family Day activities. "Two families - both from the U.S. but currently living in Regina - rented a cabin at the [Kenosee] Inn and stayed the weekend hoping to, one, see a moose, and two, enjoy the family day events. They were successful at both."
The Family Day Winter Fest started after lunch Feb. 21 and included tobogganing, among many other activities.
Everyone appeared to have a fantastic time, a sure sign the event will continue for another year. Many of the Park's winter activities, such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and tobogganing will continue to be available as long as weather permits.
As there are risks associated with tobogganing - the hill can be quite fast if the riders wants it to be - Schafer wants to remind people to exercise caution.
"We'd like to remind people to be careful and cautious when tobogganing," says Schafer. "Helmets are highly recommended. It's also highly recommended to test the speed of your sled and snow conditions from path up the hill before attempting to go right to the top."
