The Estevan Police Service has received government funding.

REGINA - The Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety is providing $440,000 for four police positions in Estevan through the Municipal Police Grants program in 2021-22.

"Our government is committed to supporting our police services and the work they do to ensure public safety," said Estevan MLA Lori Carr, the minister of Social Services, on behalf of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Christine Tell.

"This investment will strengthen the Estevan community and provide our policing services with crucial resources."

The funding for Estevan will support the implementation of a police and crisis team (PACT), which was announced in the provincial budget, and comprises police officers and mental health workers who provide an integrated and coordinated response to persons experiencing mental health crisis in the community.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance is also providing $180,000 for one position as part of the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan initiative.

"We would like to thank the province for these funding initiatives in policing, which allow more manpower on the streets to keep our community safe, along with important initiatives such as drug intel, major crimes and organized crime as well as traffic, which together will allow us to be better equipped and safer for our city," Estevan Mayor Roy Ludwig said.

The Ministry of Corrections and Policing provides funds to police services across Saskatchewan through the Municipal Police Grants program to support 133 municipal police positions and targeted policing initiatives.
