The Carlyle Town Council met on Aug. 21 to discuss a variety of topics related to the well being of the town.
Drainage concerns
David and Kyra Sharp attended the town meeting in order to speak about their troubling issues with basement flooding. According to the Sharp's their basement has been flooded a number of times due to the inadequate drainage system near their home.
Town Council expressed their understanding as they had been discussing the drainage system on the south side of town last meeting. Ultimately they made the decision to ensure the drainage ditches are cleaned and mowed, while also adding an overflow drainage ditch near Lions Park. They hope to widen the ditches slightly to allow more water to flow through in the case of extreme downpours, so the excess water does not back up at the 4th St. and Carlyle Ave. intersection before being able to follow the drainage system.
Recreational Practitioners Meeting
Council member, Jenn Sedor, will be attending a free meeting in Estevan which focuses on different ideas directed towards recreational opportunities. Her intention is to take representatives from the different recreational boards in town as well, if they are interested.
Fire Board meeting report
Town Council members on the Fire Board reported on their latest meeting. One of the ideas brought forth at the Fire Board meeting included the possibility of moving into a large shop, which may become available to buy. Fire Chief Trent Lees told council members that this would be a good option for a training facility, as opposed to building a new structure.
Lagoon update
As long as the weather cooperates the liner will be placed this week. This step is highly dependent on the weather, but after the liner is placed the project should be able to be completed in a short amount of time.
Untidy premises
Houses which have been deemed untidy will receive a letter in the mail asking them to clean up.
Taxation Options
As with last meeting, tax options for next year were regarded. Council is going to continue pondering what will be best for next year as they look at their operating costs next year in order to discern what taxes and tax tools should be set to.
Dutch Elm Disease
The town has discovered four trees this year, which are infected with Dutch Elm Disease. These trees will be cut down and disposed of. Last year there had been two infected and the year before that only one. The town will continue to monitor this and hopefully bring it under control.
Town vehicle breaks down
The town's old garbage truck has seen the last of its days. The rear axle fell out while it was pulling the town's sander. When the axle fell out, the sander tipped to its side. Though the sander can be fixed, the truck cannot be. The town is going to look into finding another vehicle, for a reasonable price, but will continue to control dust with the sander by transporting it behind the dump truck.
