Dance for Leukemia

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) is the largest voluntary cancer research agency specifically focused on finding cures and better treatments for blood cancer patients.

Stephanie Barnes of Oxbow Dance has decided to have a Zumba fundraiser this year to raise money for LLSC.

鈥淭hree years ago my father was diagnosed with lymphoma. His blood cancer was discovered though ulcers in his stomach. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation and has now been cancer free for two years,鈥 Barnes explains.

Barnes goes on to state that the LLSC has been a very positive group for her parents. She says they have been very helpful and comforting during her father鈥檚 journey.

鈥淭hey are so supportive and have so much information whether you are at the beginning of your journey or have been going through it a little longer.鈥

It is because of this support that Barnes decided to have a fundraiser for the group.

鈥淓very year the LLSC has a Light the Night fundraiser. This is a fundraiser that takes place all over Canada. You can raise money in different ways, bake sales, Zumba classes or getting pledges for the walk.鈥

Her fundraising team is called Team Greeley; it is located in Newfoundland. Barnes states that they have had a tonne of support over the last couple of years with the bake sale her mother and auntie have put together.

鈥淥ur family members collect pledges for running or walking for the Light the Night walk and this year I am offering two nights of Zumba classes. All proceeds will go to the LLSC.鈥

The Light the Night fundraiser is on Oct. 24 all across Canada. It will be a virtual walk due to COVID-19 but everyone is encouraged to participate and show their support. For more information on this event you can check out the LLSC website for more details.
