Crocus 80 Theatre has recently made TheatreOne history becoming the first ensemble cast to win the Janet Lowndes Trophy for Acting.
The women who took the stage in Carlyle last month at the Carlyle Memorial Hall delivered another thrilling performance. The competition was held in Regina at the Regina Little Theatre and ran from Oct. 31 to Nov.1. The competition welcomed actors and theatres from across the province vying for various prizes. Crocus 80 Theatre performed on the Friday evening, and had their adjudication on Saturday morning. In addition to becoming the first theatre to win the Janet Lowndes Trophy the theatre picked up other prestigious awards. "Collateral Bodies" won the Shumiatcher Trophy for best play, director Charline Doney won the Florence Eberle Memorial Trophy for best director. Cast member and executive member of the Crocus 80 Theatre Sabrina Kraft said the cast was elated when they found out they had won."We were told that the acting award has NEVER gone to an ensemble cast before. So we accomplished a first in TheatreOne history," she said.
"Collateral Bodies" delves into the subject of femicide, as told by six different characters, each representing a different culture. The seventh character, the "Woman in White who was silent and used dance to convey the pain, hurt or sadness the women felt while imparting their story. . "Collateral Bodies" was written by Erin Rachel Kaplan and used research, interviews, documentaries and historical texts to support the stories. The characters are not true to life but the stories are real and reflect what happens in the world each day. Chelsey Edwards portrayed the "Woman in White," and the other cast members were Cara Schultz (Hope), AnneMarie Martineau (Rajeey), Sabrina Kraft (Omid), Connie Nightingale (Esperanza), Emera Megenbir (Nadiya) and Wendy Sidloski (Asha).The crew included director Charline Doney, stage manager and costume director Rae Keefe, lighting and sound technicians Neal Keefe and Rob Doney, choreography Tyla Rimmer and stage crew Miles Martineau.Other Theatre One awards presented included George Barnet Trophy that went to the Regina Little Theatre production of "Perriott and Mr. Grump" for best runner-up to play. Bernie Cardin from the Battleford Community Players won the Nancy and Sam Goodfellow Trophy for Acting and Sharon Pope from the Tumbleweed Theatre from Balgonie won the Best Actor/Actress in a Support Role Award. The Prairieland Players from Kerrobert won the Kathleen Nouch C.D.A. Trophy for Technical and Backstage Award.
