Darlene Olsen's Creative Tables for Cancer was once again a great success. The seventh annual event was hosted in Prairie Place where approximately 420 people came together. The event was held to raise money for the Look Good, Feel Better program and the Moose Mountain Health Care Recruitment Committee.
A total of 42 tables were set up. Ranging in themes and decorations the tables varied greatly. From fall themes to Riders to around the world and more the tables were all beautifully decorated.
Hostesses and hosts enjoyed giving their friends and families a chance to enjoy a night out.
"I've done a table every year she's hosted this," Cathy Burton explained. "It's a lot of fun and many of us who do tables now tell her to put us down for the next year, even though it's sometimes difficult to think of a theme."
The event is touted as being a wonderful evening which allows people to support each other in the community.
"Everyone here has been affected by cancer in one way or another," stated Lynn Brady, one of the hostesses.
As the night progressed Nicole Currie of The Pearl Boutique got up to speak about the efforts Olsen has put into the evening: "This one woman brought a whole room of people together. The amount of time she puts into this and how she genuinely cares about people is wonderful."
Numerous raffles were held and the silent auction was well supported by everyone. In addition to the usual fundraising efforts, a new mystery raffle was held with four large prizes disguised by wrapping.
This went over quite well and Olsen believes she will again look to businesses to support the mystery raffle in the future.
The evening progressed to include a fashion show with local businesses and a few fashions coming from Regina.
Two local speakers were introduced to the amassed crowd as well. JoAnne DeCorby and Lena Wilson spoke about their experiences dealing with cancer and living as survivors.
Each woman showed courage in their speeches, speaking in front of the amassed crowd. Powerfully moving, the speakers were well received. As tears welled, laughter was soon found while the women spoke.
Their personal stories were appreciated by the crowd, while Wilson also had those who had overcome cancer stand. With approximately one per table getting to their feet a thunderous applause went through the hall in support of the individuals standing.
Speaking about family and how they were able to continue their journey through battling cancer and thanking family, friends, and teachers who were strong for children at the time for all of their support. The women were celebrated and given both applause and embraces following their speeches.
Though they have yet to make a final tally Olsen was happy with how the evening turned out once again adding that the night is only a success because of the hostesses and people who attend whom have shown great support over the past seven years. Olsen is already looking forward to next year.
"It was terrific. Reports are very good from everyone I've talked to," Olsen said.
