The Canadian Library Association announced that October would be Canadian Library Month. Canadian Library Month is a celebration of libraries across Canada and the importance they play in the lives of everyday people.

This year's theme is Libraries Connect. Libraries are a key in Canadian communities, as they provide a safe public space for people to meet, learn, connect and grow. Over 21 million Canadians hold a public library card, making public libraries the most popular cultural institution in the country. More than 97 per cent of Canadians live in communities served by a public library.

Saskatchewan itself is big on libraries and holds its own Saskatchewan Libraries Week. The theme for the province's 2012 library week is Celebrating Our Past, Imagining Our Future. The week will be held from Oct. 15 and Oct. 21.

Saskatchewan Library Association is inviting the citizens of Saskatchewan to celebrate the important contribution that libraries have made in the past to literacy, education, and quality of life in the province. The goal in the future is to use the best of traditional approaches and innovative technology to contribute to the public.

In Carlyle alone the library offers several reading programs and literacy activities for children in the summer, and offers story hours throughout the year. Not only is the library a great learning experience for kids but it also offers resources through its large collection of books for adults. Visitors are also able to use one of the facility's computers to check emails and do research.

Saskatchewan has a co-operative network of more than 1000 libraries. School Library Day in Saskatchewan is also celebrated on Oct. 23.Let's all celebrate Canadian Library Month in October 2012 and don't forget to thank your local librarian!
