Celebrate 2014 with a mask

This New Year's Eve people in Arcola and neighbouring communities in the southeast can ring in the new year in a fresh and interesting way.

This New Year's Eve people in Arcola and neighbouring communities in the southeast can ring in the new year in a fresh and interesting way.

As opposed to a typical New Year's party, organizers have opted to host the area's first New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball at the Arcola Prairie Hall on Tuesday, Dec. 31. The ball set to begin at 6 p.m. and end at 2 a.m. Tickets for the event stand at a cost of $60 per person and features dinner, midnight champagne and a late luncheon. One of the organizers of the ball, Tara Cure said Tammy Workman and herself wanted to do something different to celebrate the new year and she spoke of the charity aspect of the event which will benefit the community.

"We wanted to do something fun and different this New Years, so we kind of decided we should host this and donate the funds to something local. So we decided on the Arcola Daycare, my kids currently go there and I know that they are always trying to do fundraisers and they always need it," she said.

"They only get so many grants from the government and I wanted to keep it local. I know they have been getting pledges and stuff from local companies so we figured the daycare could benefit from it." Cure explained that many people in the area can expect something completely different and said such an event doesn't happen in the area very often. The ball will also feature a hypnotist from Edmonton, who she said has travelled all over North America for corporate functions.

"...He comes highly recommended for entertainment purposes," she said.

"We also have a fully catered dinner and then we have a couple other surprises that should be happening."

The event which promises a DJ and dancing will also provide transportation to Kenosee or Carlyle for all who need it when the party concludes. Cure said it's not mandatory to dress up but encourages all to be in costume because it's a once a year event.

"We will provide masks but we encourage people to source their mask as there will be prizes for best mask," she said.

To attend the ball organizers ask that individuals who attend be 19 years and over. Tickets are available at the Pearle Boutique in Carlyle or Michael's Bakery in Arcola. Those who wish to have a table of eight for $440 can contact Tara Cure at 306-575-9234 or Tammy Workman at 306-455-2233.The catch phrase for the masquerade ball is come dressed in your best or slightly less.
