On Sept. 4, 2013 council held its first meeting for the month where the mayor and aldermen discussed various issues relevant to the town of Carlyle.

Permissions

One such issue was the case of the First Student Bus Company seeking permission to use Railway Avenue East from 4th Street East to Highway #9 south as part of their regular route. A decision was made and the bus company was granted permission to use the route.

Risk Management

The other topical issue was risk management, mayor Don Shirley commented on the risk management articles found in the SUMA magazine and asked whether council should spend some time considering risk management. However, council determined they were already carrying out the process based on their due diligence.Nevertheless they may revisit this topic once more information is available.

Green and Clean

Upon the success of the Green and Clean competition that was held earlier this summer, alderman Jennifer Sedor reported that the town of Oxbow and the town of Carlyle will exchange judges for the Green and Clean competition in the future.

Fire Inspections

Alderman Melvin George reported on the fire board meeting, and asked if building inspections by the fire chief would be permitted if requested by the business. There was agreement there should be no objections if the business requests such a service, at no cost to the town. It was suggested it may be time to join with other towns to jointly hire a fire inspector and bylaw enforcement officer.

Additional RCMP

Alderman Roy Olmstead reported the Â鶹ÊÓƵ East Transportation Planning Committee (SETPC) requested additional RCMP in Carlyle. The advisory committee's request comes as result of 60 per cent of the current staff being used in White Bear. Olmstead reported the Staff Sargent indicated speeding and texting are the two biggest problems on the highways in this area. Speeding and texting while driving are issues that have been brought up in council meeting in the past. Council will meet again on Sept. 18.
