Carlyle Town Council addresses transportation, housing

Transportation

After meeting with representatives from Town Council, Transport Canada has advised CN Rail that the railway crossing near Carlyle High School must be repaired by September 1, 2014, citing safety concerns.

Council addressed numerous safety concerns and complaints regarding the roads surrounding Carlyle Playground. After much discussion, members of council decided that Playground Parking Only signs would be erected.

While responding to requests that the speed limit be lowered at the junction of Highways 9 and 13, council stated that this area is under the jurisdiction of Saskatchewan Highways and the speed limit will remain at 70 km per hour.

As part of the Â鶹ÊÓƵeast Saskatchewan Transportation Planning Committee, members of council addressed concerns about lines on highway passing lanes not being visible. One stretch of road mentioned was the passing lane near the Bear Claw Casino. Council was informed that once potholes were repaired, lines would then be re-painted in the affected area(s).

This year's dustproofing on 8th Street West (a gravel road) was deemed inadequate. Council decided to look for a better solution for next year. In addition, potholes on 8th Street and Railway Avenue will be repaired.

On behalf of the Carlyle Flying Club, Blair Andrew and Brad Walker made a presentation to council stating the advantages of Carlyle Airport expanding the length of its runway to 5,000 feet, citing medical and economic benefits to the area. After asking numerous questions, council agreed to consider the proposal.

Housing and Maintenance

Council agreed they would support contractors building rental housing using funds from the province's provincial incentive program. This program provides funding up to $5,000 per door.

In preparation for Dr. Ali, who arrives from Iraq in mid-October, council is taking steps to ready the doctor's residence.

Council made the decision to raise the back alley behind Carlyle Avenue only in areas where it was absolutely necessary in order to prevent flooding.

PK Painting was the successful and sole tender for the job painting the exterior wood trim on the Medical Clinic.

Bylaw repeal

Council agreed to repeal Bylaw 4-90 regarding the regulation of swimming pools. As this bylaw was adopted in 1990, council agreed to instead use current zoning.

Town Float

This year, the Town of Carlyle took a float to the Manor Rodeo Parade.

Town staff received a thank you for their work performing maintenance near the Carlyle Golf Club.

Mayor Don Shirley, on behalf of the Town of Carlyle, congratulated Roy and Karen Olmstead on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
