Μύ Μύ Μύ Μύ Μύ Μύ The Carlyle & District Lions Club held their 26th Annual Supper, Raffle and Auction Thursday, March 2 at Carlyle Memorial Hall. Since its inception, the event has raised over $500,000 for local causes. Although an exact figure was not available at press time, over $35,000 was raised at this year's fundraiser, which was a sell-out with 216 people in attendance.
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ Wade Trippel was the winner of the $1,000 cash prize, while Brian and Michelle Romaniuk won the $1,000 travel voucher.
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ In its 54-year history, The Carlyle Lions Club has raised over $1,300,000 which has benefited numerous causes and initiatives, including Lions projects: Cavalcade for Diabetes, Journey for Sight, Lions Eye Bank, Sight and Service Foundation and leadership training. as well as sports such as golf and curling.Μύ Throughout their history, the Carlyle Lions have also supported the Carlyle Leisure Complex and the Carlyle Memorial Hall as well as the town's library, golf course and sports arena- in addition to other athletic and cultural causes.
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ Carlyle Lions Park and campground is the organization's most well-known project and most recently, Lions members have partnered with Carlyle's Homespun Committee on a walking path through the park- a legacy project which will celebrate 100 years of Lions Clubs International.
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ Lions member and event chairperson Wayne Wilson starts preparing the fundraiser in January and says: βThe support we receive from businesses, individuals and other organizations is just phenomenal. The proceeds of this event directly benefit the communities in our area. None of the money raised goes into the Lions' coffers-everything goes into community coffers. But we couldn't do any of this without the support and generosity of everyone who supports us.β
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ βIt's a two-way street.β
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ Evidence of the Lions' largesse decorated the walls of the Carlyle Memorial Hall as 216 attendees enjoyed a social, a pork and turkey dinner with all the trimmings (prepared by caterers Linda Chapman and Eileen Corrigan) and silent and live auctions, raffles and other contests featuring hundreds of prizes-which raised over $35,000.
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ Auctioneer Ward Cutler has stated that he has auctioned βHoney, gold eggs and even balloons!β at past Lions fundraisers and this year's event was no exception, as the hometown hero and world-class auctioneer got top doller for items ranging from concert tickets to coolers and autographedΜύ memorabilia from curler Guy Hemming and golfer Graham DeLaet.
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ A Carlyle Lions tradition was upheld as Lions Club member and beloved baker Dennis Feduk donated a 'Pie of the Month' subscription to the auction, which fetched a final price of $325. Feduk also presented Ward Cutler with a Saskatoon pie as a token of thanks for Cutler's donation of his time and talent to the event.
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ A visibly-moved Cutler told the crowd: βIt's always good to come home and I can tell you that these pies are worth every penny.β
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ Cutler's auctioneering skills along with his sense of humour and insider's knowledge of the area make him a much-anticipated addition to the evening. This was his 22nd year weilding the gavel at the Carlyle event and Lion Kent Holland says, βIf we didn't have Ward here, we'd have to provide some form of entertainment. But Ward's more than an auctioneer, he's an entertainer, too.β
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ Lions Club president Gord Paulley summed up the evening by saying: βI want to thank all of you guys and girls for coming here tonight and having a good time for a good cause.β
ΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύΜύ Cutler summed up the evening by saying: βLadies and gentlemen, it's always a pleasure to come home to this great event. We've done 22 years- now let's talk about 23!β
