Always having a desire to be involved in politics, Scott Kirkness’s journey led him west in 2013 after convocation at Laurentian University.

Finally settling in Carlyle in 2016, he and his wife are both teachers with the Â鶹ÊÓƵ East Cornerstone Public School Division (SECPSD) and feel very at home with their three children, ages four, two and three months. Teaching middle years, which presently equates to Grades 5-12 in Stoughton school and being a father of three only adds to his leadership experiences as vice-president of the Laurentian Student Union and being on the SECPSD Teacher’s Association. Planning, organizing groups, completing requirements, building consensus and in essence, all problem-solving strategies came through as second nature.

Kirkness shared, “I feel like this is the right time for my family and me.  I’d like to set an example for my children that the best way get change is to jump right in and help.â€

Discussing the challenges we face in every aspect of life reveals examples of things Kirkness would like to help with in the town. Understanding that there is a bigger vision of at least 10 years, Kirkness expressed that he would like to be a part of some “small, doable projects like sidewalk improvements for our seniors and young families.â€

When asked what he would like to convey, Kirkness responded, “I suppose what I'd like to communicate to the public is this: I'm not from Carlyle, and I don't work here. Yet, this is where my wife and I have chosen to start and grow our family. This town is special, it has a little bit of everything. It’s big enough to find what you want, and small enough to find who you want. I’m not trying to join the council to come in and change everything.  I would rather help Carlyle stay on course, grow sustainably, and continue to be a wonderful place to raise a family.â€
