Working with Integrity Maintenance Ltd. for approximately 13 years, Hugh Hislop鈥檚 detailed work with occupational health and safety (OH&S) specifics over the years has prepared him well for the challenge of bringing a diverse group of people together to work towards a common goal. Running meetings, working on committees to complete projects, documentation and communication are common in his work environment. Although he knows from experience the challenge it can be, Hislop is excited to bring the town and council together in this way and to challenge himself with something new.
鈥淢y interest in politics and actually seeing how things are getting done regarding community initiatives is another major reason I want to be on council. If I get elected, I would like to help businesses succeed and recreation thrive because that is what brings people to a town,鈥 Hislop said enthusiastically.
鈥淚 would like to see how it all works, what town council runs and regulates and what it doesn鈥檛.鈥
Hugh shared ideas about some concepts that might be issues for some people in the community. Some of them could be very valid and benefit everyone in the community, so discussing them and bringing consensus, even when not everyone agrees is difficult but needs to be done.
Seeing a recreation director for the Town of Carlyle would be great according to Hislop, as it would not only create a job but it would help to unify the different organizations and facilities in their communication.
鈥淭he different organizations could help each other out a lot when a helping hand is needed, even if it is running the kitchen,鈥 he explained. 鈥淎 lot of the time you don鈥檛 hear about something that is going on and I don鈥檛 know exactly how you make that all work together but I would like to help with that.鈥
Hislop likes what he sees the current council is doing and hopes he can bring his experience, ideas and work ethic to the team.
