WEYBURN – The Settlement Workers in Schools program (SWIS) of Weyburn and Estevan presented the book, “With Our Orange Hearts” to the 鶹Ƶeast Cornerstone and Holy Family School Divisions on Tuesday afternoon.
In the first photo are Michelle Neighbour of SWIS Estevan and Maria Barranco of SWIS Weyburn, presenting 35 books to Cheryl Anderson, coordinator of Student Services for SE Cornerstone.
At right, Sabrina Gulka, vice-principal of St. Michael School in Weyburn, accepted a book from Barranco.
The third presentation has James Richards, assistant director and regional branch manager of 鶹Ƶeast Regional Library, accepting books from Barranco.
He said a number of these will be made available to the rural library branches as well as at Weyburn and Estevan’s libraries.
The book is based on “Every Child Matters”, and was written by Phyllis Webstad, founder of Orange Shirt Day.
As children, life can be full of big emotions. This book encourages young children to open their hearts and listen as others share their feelings, and to be more comfortable sharing their own feelings. Listening is a first step towards reconciliation.
This book is important because it emphasizes how communication is used as a tool to express yourself and listen to others, in a process of healing.
SWIS is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
