(l-r) Event designer Roxann Waelchli of Arcola and floral designer Maira Waechli of Yorkton often team up to plan and create events and ambience of all kinds: ranging from large events like staff parties and weddings to single tablescapes and "everything in between," says Roxann.

Event planner Roxann Waelchli wants you to be a guest at your own gathering.

Waelchli, of Arcola is a certified event planner and owner of RW Events Design. Her company can create occasions of all kinds: from a single dinner party tablescape, to professional and personal gatherings: including corporate retreats, meetings, Christmas parties, weddings, birthday parties and even funerals.

"If you want to do a party in your home, I can come in and make that beautiful, using your dishes. Or if you want something different, you can tell me what you want and I can get it," she says. "I also can do larger gatherings, such as corporate retreats and Christmas parties."

"With corporate retreats, I can plan the meetings, handle the set-up and handle everything from icebreakers to group bonding activities. These meetings, as well as Christmas parties and other office gatherings are often things that are left to someone in the office to plan. And it's not that they can't do it, but it's a question of what's not being done in the office, while this person is trying to plan a party or meeting."

Christmas parties, weddings and birthday parties are a big part of Waelchi's repetoire and the pathway to her profession was confirmed when she planned her wedding. "When I planned my own wedding, I wasn't stressed at all," she says. "My friends all say the worst part of their weddings was the planning. For me, planning my wedding was one of the best things about it and I got a lot of good feedback, so that just kind of confirmed it for me."

Waelchli describes herself as "task-oriented and creative", which her event-planning certification has proven. "I had three years to finish my training and I did it in six months," she says. "My classes showed me what I've been doing right all along and I also learned things that I can and will use in the future."

"I even learned how to plan a proper funeral, with an emphasis on different cultures, traditions and beliefs. During such a stressful time, people want to spend time with their families, not worry if there are enough squares for everyone," says Waelchli. "That's where I can help."

Whether the occasion is celebratory or sad, Waelchli says, "Being a local person, you also know the vendors. From my own wedding, I know who I'd use again and who I wouldn't use again."

"I think a lot of people think party planning is a fluffy job," says Waelchli. "But there are so many things to consider and people often don't have the time to do it now. Whether it's your husband's birthday, or something bigger, it's nice to be a guest at your own party."

"I have just always loved to have lots of people around and I have always loved planning and having parties," she adds. " But I never wanted to be the centre, I always wanted to be in the background. I love when people are having a good time. I want them to feel happy, to feel like they're taken care of, like they're at somebody else's party."
