ESTEVAN — The Added Money Power City Barrel Racing event at the Estevan Exhibition grounds attracted lots of riders and Hooves and Hawgs saw dirt bikers compete against good old horse power on Saturday.
Emma Hansen claimed the champion title in the Open 1D Power City Added Money Barrel Race on Saturday.
In the Hooves vs. Hawgs event, Carrie Ellias was the fastest horse rider, and Brooks Milford was the fastest dirt biker. In the final face-off, Milford proved to be Hooves vs. Hawgs champion for this year.
The events were a part of the Black and Gold Day, which also featured Estevan Bears' and Bruins' preseason games and food truck wars.
The barrel racing was put together in just over two weeks by a small committee consisting of Callie and Casey Barbour, Cayla Doner and Sarah Yoner. And at the special request of the Estevan Exhibition Association, they also helped to organize Hooves vs. Hawgs races, in which horse riders competed against dirt bikes. The group helped to organize the Hooves side of the event, and Lucinda Milford with the Trackside Motocross Association arranged the dirt bike participants.
Callie Barbour said that there wasn't much time to put things together, and they were very happy with how the events turned out.
"It turned out really, really well. We had a good turnout for the barrel racers. And then for the Hooves and Hawgs, the grandstands were full and we had a full crowd. There's a lot of traffic. I think overall, the Exhibition Association would be very happy with the turnout that they have for this event," Barbour said.
A lot of participants in both events were from the Estevan area, and many came from other communities in the southeast with some from as far away as Moosomin and Whitewood.
The Barbours ran Power City Barrel Series all summer long, and they felt the name would fit this final summer event as well. However, Callie noted that the Black and Gold Day competitions were a one-time set of events at this point.
"This was like a one-and-done type situation. But moving forward, it could potentially be an annual event. We'll just have to see what the future brings for us. It was very successful, and I think moving forward, we could definitely put something similar like this on again," Barbour said. "Traffic was unreal. I was very shocked by the amount of people there."
The committee was able to find some sponsors that helped make the event happen. And with added money, the payouts to winners were "well above average", Barbour said.
In the barrel races, in the Open 1D portion of the event, Hansen's time was 16.626 seconds. Nina Lonsberry came in second in 16.648 seconds, and Chyanne Ogle was third with a time of 16.665 seconds. Kia Rosenbaum came in fourth in 16.691, and Chloe Frisk made it fifth in 16.731 seconds.
In the Open 2D race, Nadya McKim came in first in 17.658 seconds, Kaila Jutras was second in 17.661 seconds, Abby Coderre was third in 17.675 seconds, April Breault was fourth in 17.675 seconds, and Lindsay Collins completed the course with the fifth-best time of 17.857 seconds.
In the Open 3D race, Christa Kurtz came in first with 18.628 seconds, Korbyn Kaufmann was second with 18.749-second time, Sandy Stewart came third in 18.908 seconds, Sarah Yoner was fourth with 18.991 seconds, and Torie Froese (Boyes) was fifth with 19.153 seconds.
In the Youth 1D race, Neela Hall came first in 16.911 seconds, Rana Beierbach was second with 17.446 seconds, and Kali Johnson finished third in 17.495 seconds.
In the Youth 2D race, Sierra Englot was first with 17.915 seconds, Abby Coderre came second in 18.514 seconds, and Korbyn Kaufmann took third place with 18.749 seconds.
In the Youth 3D race, Rana Beierbach claimed first place with 19.487 seconds, Emma Englot was second with 19.688 seconds, and Adrianna Junk came third in 19.765 seconds.
Paisley Mclntyre, Tenya Potoma, Carter Stewart, Abigail Jutras, Blaise Ebert, Jess Stewart, Blayke Watson, Audree Jutras and Maci Boyes partook in the peewee race.
In Hooves vs. Hawgs, for the most part, the horses outran the bikes with about 75 per cent of horse riders completing the course faster than their dirt bike counterparts. Yet, in the final run, the bike was faster than the horse.
