On Friday, Jan. 31, the Envision Counseling and Support Centre held their first assertiveness workshop for women in Carlyle.
The workshop was created by Envision to help women stand-up for themselves not only in relationships but in other aspects of life such as work and even parenting. It also allows those who attended to learn how to stay guilt-free when they make a decision and learn the freedom of expressing their own opinions.
Six women attended the workshop but for confidentiality purposes their identities including the facilitators at the workshop, cannot be released. However one of the facilitators did speak with the Observer explaining some of the topics discussed at the clinic.
"We discussed the different behaviors, the passive and aggressive and looked into that in detail and we did role plays to help reinforce being assertive," she said. "A lot of times we feel guilty for saying no or try and think of an excuse of why we can't do something when we don't want to. And so a part of assertiveness is teaching how to say no and feel ok with saying no without having to make up an excuse or trying to rationalize why you're not doing that."
She said the women liked the atmosphere and felt comfortable talking about their stories and the workshop allowed them to express themselves freely.
"You can start to see women move forward and almost that recognition of - letting them know it is ok to say no but hearing it from somebody else allows them to feel a little bit better," she said.
As a facilitator, she guided the group through different scenarios getting feedback from the women, finding out some of their main issues. Sheena Wock, outreach coordinator at the centre's head office in Estevan described the Assertiveness Workshop as a success.
"Envision was very pleased with the turn out and the participation these women brought with them, their eagerness to learn, and develop their strengths. Envision looks forward to hosting another workshop for the Carlyle area so we hope people will hear about the success and register when the next workshop is available," Wock said.
"Envision Counseling and Support Centre wants to thank the participants again for their ability to share, and their want to grow as a person."
In March Envision is hoping to have a boundaries workshop where they will be teaching women about setting limitations. Envision's facilitator said they will look at the different boundaries everyone has and what are the steps to be taken when a boundary is crossed.
"It's to understand the need for personal boundaries, how boundaries influence our relationship with others in our present lives. Ways to set healthy boundaries and how to trust our own thoughts and feelings," she said.
