Arcola students participated in a Wake-a-thon on Friday, April 4, to enjoy 12 hours of roaming the school at night as they raised $1,733.50 for Telemiracle 2015.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, April 4, the Arcola School Student Representative Council hosted a Wake-a-thon, which focused on raising funds for Telemiracle 2015.

Wake-a-thons are a popular fundraising method for schools to use which brings together fun activities for 12 hours in the school.

This is Arcola School's seventh year of hosting the Wake-a-thon, but funds typically went towards other school activities. This year the SRC decided to begin a year of fundraising for Telemiracle, however, with the goal of raising a substantial sum in order to take it to Telemiracle 2015.

SRC had both planned activities available for the 53 students that attended as well as free time for the youth to enjoy.

"We scheduled games this year like volleyball, basketball, and dodgeball to help keep people occupied," Emily Ellis, one of the SRC members explained.

This included a very popular dodgeball tournament complete with a trophy for the winning team. The tournament saw nearly all of the youth who attended the Wake-a-thon compete as four teams of 10 fought for the title.

In addition to the gym being open there were a variety of classrooms available with board games, video games, and movies open to the students throughout the night.

The SRC also produced a talent show at 2:30 a.m. and despite being somewhat tired those who performed were quite impressive. From a fun air band which had the room rocking to "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen to numerous skilled pianists to a group improv performance the students ultimately had fun whether taking the talent show seriously or as a way to, in a sense, goof off.

This entertainment was quickly followed by a school wide game of hide and seek, which seemed to be the event all students were looking forward to throughout the night.

The top fundraiser ended up being grade 10 student, Shania Taylor, who raised $149, while the school raised a total of $1,733.50 for Telemiracle 2015.
