As of March 3 the community of Arcola has been working together in the Saskatchewan Blue Cross, "Get Our Community Moving Challenge."

In this year's challenge communities are given the opportunity to win $10,000 for a project promoting physical activity.

Arcola is currently working towards rebuilding a new school track.

"Our plans with the money for the challenge is being put to[wards] upgrading our school track," Cathy Burton, one of the organizers, explained. "Right now we have a small four lane, rough looking track."

"Our hopes for the track are to make it a six lane track. This means that we are looking at adding an assortment of piping and tailings. This will give us a larger, much better draining and sloped track. With these improvements we'll be able to host other track and field events."

The challenge runs until March 17, with the winner to be announced on March 21.

Currently Arcola is sitting in the top five communities on the Saskatchewan in Motion challenge rankings, but their total number of minutes are unavailable until the 21st.

As a way to encourage the community to exercise the school has been a large help.

"We are opening our school and gym in the mornings from 6 to 8 a.m.," Burton said. "This gives people a warm place to come and get some running or walking in, or a chance to come and work out in the gym."

"Our evenings at the school are also open for lots of other community things as well. We have community volleyball, Zumba, and community basketball going on, plus all the other sporting events that our kids have on the go all year long."

The community has been very positive and excited about the project, remembering to log their minutes each day.

"We have had lots of positive feedback in regards to our community challenge," Burton stated. "People seem to be quite excited about this."

"We did have a few small problems with the login at first, but they are ironed out now and things are going well. The people involved with organizing the In Motion/Community Challenge have been great about getting issues resolved right away.

Currently they are excited to see what will come of the exercise challenge and are excited to see if they will be able to win the grand prize.

"We would like to say thanks to everyone for signing up, participating, and spreading the word about this great event," Burton exclaimed. "We are hoping this event will get our community talking and involved in getting moving. As we know everyone benefits from being active!"

Last year's winner of the challenge was Caronport, which was able to raise 500,000 minutes of physical activity.
